After spending the week studying the state’s laws surrounding legal sales of recreational marijuana, Gla-cier County Chairwoman Mary Jo Bremner recommended putting off imposing a 3% tax on marijuana sales. Her recommendation came during the Feb. 8 Commissioner meeting in Browning. Bremner reminded those at the meeting, recreational marijuana sales are limited to areas of the county not located within the boundaries of the Blackfeet Reservation.
Bremner pointed out few people attended the three public meetings held by the Commissioners on the proposed tax. While most registered opposition to the tax, the small sample size precluded any real conclusions as to public opinion, she said.
In addition, Bremner said in studying projections of funding that may come into the county as a result of such a tax, the funds realized by Glacier County may be insignificant. Bremner said Missoula County is projecting revenue around $90,000 from a 3% tax. Glacier County, she estimated, would take in somewhere in the neighborhood of $20,000. She questioned whether the costs would outweigh the funding benefits.
Bremner noted no talks have yet been held with the Blackfeet Tribe, and while the Blackfeet have allowed medical marijuana on the Reservation, they have taken no action regarding recreational cannabis.
