A hospital toilet cistern was filled with contraband in a foiled bid to smuggle it into prison.

The cistern of a hospital toilet was used as a repository for drugs and other items to be smuggled into Hawke’s Bay prison.

Napier woman Lauren Moore appeared in Hastings District Court on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to her role in the smuggling, which was foiled when police intercepted text messages between her and an inmate at the prison.

The messages related to arranging the delivery of packages to Hawke’s Bay Hospital by another man.

The man allegedly drove to the hospital’s kidney dialysis unit on September 1. He went into a toilet located in the reception area and deposited six packages wrapped in insulation tape into the cistern of the toilet.
