Man, 19, charged after police car rammed in Auckland CBDPosted by On

A 19-year-old man has been charged in relation to an incident yesterday where a police car was rammed in broad daylight in Auckland’s CBD.

Police told 1News the man is due to appear in Auckland District Court tomorrow on charges of failing to stop, as well as two charges of aggravated assault.

Yesterday, police said officers were called to the scene following reports of “erratic” driving shortly before 2.30pm.

In a video sent to 1News, a black car could be seen reversing into a police car at the bottom of Queen Street, one of the busiest areas in the city centre, near the Commercial Bay shopping mall and Britomart train station.

Officers could be seen emerging from the damaged vehicle before the black car took off down Customs St East.

Police said no one was injured throughout the incident.

“Attending staff located the car on Customs Street East, where the offending driver has [allegedly] rammed the front of a police car before taking off towards Fort Lane,” a spokesperson said yesterday.

“The police officers in the vehicle were not injured. He has stopped the vehicle there which has allowed police in the rammed vehicle time to catch up with him on foot and take him into custody.”
