Man charged with murder of woman in Melbourne CBD apartmentPosted by On

A Melbourne man accused of murdering a woman in a city apartment has been remanded in custody.

Xiaozheng Lin, 22, was assisted by a Mandarin interpreter as he appeared in person at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday afternoon.

It is alleged Lin killed a 31-year-old Chinese national on Tuesday and stole items belonging to her.

He is accused of stealing the victim’s mobile phone, tablet, a washing basket and $7080 in cash from the La Trobe Street apartment.

Lin was on Friday morning charged with murder, robbery, and theft following a police appeal.

His lawyer told the court it was the 22-year-old man’s first time in custody and he had a limited understanding of English.

The Huntingdale man also had an issue with his right leg that needed to be treated, the lawyer said.

Magistrate John Hardy noted Lin would be considered a vulnerable person in custody due to his young age and limited knowledge of English.

“I also made a notation that you have what is referred to as an impairment to your right leg and that you must be seen by the custody medical staff as soon as possible,” he said.

Lin, who did not apply for bail, was remanded in custody to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court in May for a committal mention hearing.
