Man who committed stabbing murder in Canberra’s CBD over drug dispute sentenced to more than 14 years in jailPosted by On

A 20-year-old New South Wales man has been jailed for 14-and-a-half years over a murder committed in broad daylight in a Canberra alleyway in December 2021.

Jordan Powell, 29, died after he was stabbed during an altercation with Kenan Dowden-Carlisle in Bible Lane, near Garema Place in the city centre.

Dowden-Carlisle pleaded guilty to murder in February this year.

In a sentencing hearing last month, it was revealed the dispute began over the mistaken belief Mr Powell had taken Dowden-Carlisle’s satchel, containing drugs.

Court documents showed witnesses said Dowden-Carlisle had become increasingly agitated and began accusing Mr Powell of taking the satchel.

The pair scuffled before agreeing to meet in Bible Lane, at the suggestion of another man, to “sort out their differences”.

The court heard Mr Powell struck Dowden-Carlisle in the head before the 20-year-old stabbed him — piercing his lung and heart.

Bystanders attempted to help Mr Powell, however he died from his injuries — Dowden-Carlislie fled the scene but returned later to see what was happening.

He fled again when pursued by police but was eventually arrested.
