Takeo Provincial Gendarmerie cracked down on 10 marijuana plantations in the province and cut and destroyed the illegal crops.
The operation took place on June 23 at Sla Village, Ta O Commune, Kirivong District, Takeo. the operation was led by Deputy Provincial Governor Khan Sokha with coordination from Takeo Deputy Provincial Prosecutor Nhean Borey. This is according to Lt. Col. Nget Chanthy, Deputy Commander of the Takeo Provincial Gendarmerie.
The commander said that law enforcement forces were investigating the case behind the illegal cannabis growers. According to the authorities they burned the marijuana crops in the fields.
“Prosecutors have set a policy for law enforcement to investigate plantation owners and occupants of land, especially those behind the supply of marijuana seeds to make arrests and bring them to justice,” said one official.
Kirivong District is infamous for the illegal cultivation of marijuana in the mountains. Despite the crackdown by the authorities, the illegal cultivation of cannabis continues unabated, some people say that the illegal cultivation of marijuana is well organized with rich people behind the operations.
