A Newnan man is in custody of the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office after attempting to flee from law enforcement on Tuesday morning.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested Thomas Swindle, 36, of Newnan, on charges of felony possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, misdemeanor tampering with evidence, driving with a suspended license and attempting to elude a police officer after deputies attempted to pull Swindle over early Tuesday.

According to an incident report from the Sheriff’s office, a deputy observed a silver van with its brake light not working. The vehicle stopped at the intersection of Highway 29 and Highway 16 with the front of the vehicle out in the intersection.

The report said the deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the van, and activated his blue lights and sirens, but the driver of the van, Swindle, refused to pull over.

The report said as the van passed the Valley Mobile Home Park, the driver threw multiple clear bags out of the window. As the vehicle traveled on Highway 29 north of Corinth Road, the deputy attempted a PIT maneuver but was not successful. The deputy tried again on Highway 29 South and Sewell Road, and was successful.

According to the report, Swindle was revived from the vehicle by gun point and placed under arrest without further incident. It was determined that Swindle’s driver’s license was suspended.
