NORTH HAVEN — As towns across the state decide how to regulate recreational cannabis establishments, the town Planning & Zoning Commission is seeking residents’ input on how to proceed.
Though Connecticut has legalized recreational cannabis, municipalities have the power to choose whether and how to allow the industry to set up shop within their borders.
A town could, for example, elect to allow cannabis growth but not retail, or ban recreational cannabis establishments entirely.
The PZC will hold a public input session Monday. Alan Fredricksen, the town’s land use coordinator, said the commission is hoping for community guidance on how the town should proceed.
“They’ve gotta decide what they wanna do,” he said of the commissioners. “You know, we had one meeting on it and they listened to the legal side of it, and now they want to hear from the people.”
Some municipalities, such as Hamden, have enacted temporary moratoriums as they draft regulations. Others, such as Clinton, have prohibited recreational cannabis businesses.
Though North Haven does not have a moratorium or a ban, Fredricksen said that for someone to establish a cannabis facility, “a regulations amendment would have to first be approved by the commission.”
