Perth CBD rescuers free man trapped in tiny cavity after falling between two buildingsPosted by On

Authorities say a young man is lucky to be alive after being rescued from a small space between two buildings in Perth’s CBD.

The man, thought to be in his 20s, was taken to hospital by paramedics after being removed from the 600-millimetre-wide cavity between two buildings in a laneway that runs between the Murray Street and Hay Street malls.

It is not known how he came to be there.

Department of Fire and Emergency Services acting district officer Gareth Deeg said the man was lucky his cries for help were heard.

“At approximately 6:30am this morning, a member of public notified security of a call for help … nothing was located I’m led to believe,” he said of the first attempt to find him.

Mr Deeg said it wasn’t until a second passer-by raised the alarm that police mounted a more thorough search and found a “young male adult who had fallen an unknown distance through a cavity of the building”.

He said the man was “very lucky”.

“The members of the public and the people who notified police … have potentially saved that gentleman’s life,” Mr Deeg said.

He said the man was lying flat on his back with his knees up to his chest when he was found.

It took about an hour to get him out of the cavity.
