Kisumu’s Central Business District was gripped with tension after police officers allegedly shot three people in pursuit of a matatu driver who had defied orders to stop at a roadblock.

Witnesses reported that curious Jua Kali artisans clashed with the police when the fleeing driver approached Jua Kali area, leading to live rounds being fired.

Among those injured in the Tuesday morning incident were a woman on her way to work and two men.

Jack Hussein, the chairman of Jua Kali, accused the police of using excessive force, stating that innocent civilians’ lives were at risk.

“We were not part of what was happening between the police and the Matatu driver. They came to our area of work,” said Hussein.

He said that the police officers should have summoned the Sacco the vehicle belonged to instead of risking the lives of innocent civilians.
