A local activist group dedicated to governmental and police accountability and social programs reform is seeking 35,000 signatures on a petition that will put police reform measures, marijuana decriminalization, and abortion rights on the May 2023 general election ballot. ACT4SA led by executive director Ananda Tomas, unveiled the petition on Monday, October 17, that would add a measure on the ballot to make San Antonio the first Texas city to decriminalize marijuana if passed by voters.

Called the San Antonio Justice Charter, the measure would specifically “eliminate the enforcement of low level marijuana offenses,” which would be a major leap from Bexar County’s cite and release on low level marijuana offenses that went into effect in 2018. The petition also has a measure that would also call on San Antonio Police Department to not enforce the statewide law that makes abortion illegal.
