Shreveport mayoral candidate Melvin Slack says he can relate to the homeless people near Government Plaza who sell and smoke weed to survive because he was once one of them. That’s why if he’s elected, all quantities of marijuana will be legalized for possession, and there will be no penalties for selling it.
“Most homeless people smoke weed, most homeless sell weed. But if you allow them to smoke it and sell it, they can have an income so they can get off the streets and have a roof over their heads,” Slack said. “Believe it or not people go to Government Plaza to buy it because they know it’s out there.”
Slack himself has been charged for marijuana possession twice, including during his last mayoral run in 2014. Ultimately both charges were dropped. Today, he says he’s been healed of the need to smoke the plant, but still acknowledges the medical and recreational benefits of it, noting it helped him deal with the post-traumatic stress syndrome he developed after his time in the military, and helped him through his stint with homelessness.
“I’m completely delivered of it but I used it for years,” said Slack. “That’s why I keep trying to tell people to deal with the streets you have to have street mentality. I’ve been homeless.”
