The Simi Valley City Council is revisiting whether to allow cannabis dispensaries and related businesses in town.
The council Monday night took a first step and voted to direct staff to poll the city’s four neighborhood councils about dispensaries, cultivators, manufacturers, distributors and testing facilities operating in Simi Valley.
The neighborhood councils advise the City Council and Planning Commission on residents’ concerns, proposed developments and more.
The City Council in 2018 considered allowing cannabis dispensaries and related businesses in the city but ultimately decided not to based on an advisory ballot measure in which voters narrowly said no.
Other cities in Ventura County, including Port Hueneme, Ojai, and Oxnard, allow cannabis dispensaries.
Others, including Camarillo and Fillmore, don’t.

Simi Valley Mayor Keith Mashburn said Monday night that some residents have asked the City Council to revisit the issue.
“The number of people that have been requesting us to look at this again seems to be relatively high,” he said at a brief hearing.
Deputy City Manager Samantha Argabrite will be polling the neighborhood councils and present their feedback to the City Council in May. The City Council will then decide how to proceed.
It could place another advisory measure, similar to 2018’s, on November’s general municipal election ballot.
