  • Plumes of smoke spewing into air in Melbourne CBD
  • Residents in surrounding area told to be on high alert

Fire crews and emergency services have brought an enormous blaze in Melbourne‘s CBD under control.

A Victoria Emergency alert said the blaze erupted at around 4pm on Clarendon St, near Haig St, Southbank, triggering a major emergency response.

The fire, which police are treating as suspicious, engulfed two vacant factory lots, but there are many residential buildings very close by.

Around 30 firefighters arrived soon after the alert was raised to tackle the blaze, which was sending plumes of ‘suffocating’ smoke spewing into the air.

It took crews about an hour to contain the blaze, which engulfed two small factories near Haig Street.

There were no reports of people inside the building but Fire Rescue Victoria crews will do a thorough search when it is safe to do so.
