The fight to keep Timaru’s CBD alive has taken another step with business owners asked to vote to decide whether to establish a Business Improvement District (BID) for the area.

“It would have been nice to have got it (the BID) through in time for the annual plan,” Timaru CBD Group chair Allan Booth said.

“It’s urgent to create a force for a like-minded group to do some stuff to help encourage growth in the CBD.”

More than 200 voter packs went out this week to CBD property owners and stakeholders with voting opening on Monday and closing on May 2.

To get to the next stage, at least 25% of those eligible will need to vote – with at least 51% of those voting in support.If the BID gets the support required, it would go to the Timaru District Council for final approval. A small levy would be added to the property owners and stakeholders’ rates to cover the costs of the BID.

BIDs have been established in New Zealand and around the world with business owners and stakeholders working together on marketing, promotional events, campaigns, security patrols, and lobbying.
