U.S. Customs and Border Protection says a drug-smuggling suspect escaped capture this week by driving his vehicle into the Rio Grande River.

Border Patrol agents and state troopers pursued the truck after it failed to stop for an immigration inspection. The driver of the truck drove through a fence and hit a Border Patrol vehicle before dumping the vehicle into the Rio Grande near Brownsville.

The suspect crossed the river and escaped into Mexico. Law enforcement recovered 480 pounds of marijuana from the abandoned truck.
