It seems as if Thailand is getting pretty serious about making marijuana a widely adopted and readily available commodity, after four cops in Chonburi province were punished for arresting a woman who’d grown a single cannabis plant.

The four policemen had previously arrested 55-year-old Pornpimol Prakobpol at her home after she was found growing the plant, and was charged with illegally producing drugs. The plant turned out to only weigh around 20 grams, and the woman had alleged that it was used to produce medication that would help treat her high blood pressure and diabetes.

However, the cops were soon reprimanded and penalized for the arrest, and moved to inactive posts following strong public backlash – especially with the growth and consumption of marijuana at home becoming decriminalized on June 9, 2022.

The provincial commander of Chonburi Major General Atthasit Kitjahan also agreed with the public sentiment, and criticized the policemen saying that future arrests should be made using sound judgment, before attempting to apprehend locals growing weed plants in their homes.
