A vehicle with mismatched licence plates was spotted by officers on patrol at the time, according to Alderman JP Smith who shared the incident in a Facebook post.

The chase ensued after the driver of the vehicle sped off when officers attempted to stop it.

The vehicle crashed into a nearby property in Vredehoek a short while later.

The suspects then attempted to escape on foot but were apprehended soon after.

Numerous suspected stolen items including a flat-screen TV, wine and golf clubs were found inside the vehicle.

Smith concluded his post by commending the City officers for their service in carrying out their duties daily, coupled with technology and in support of the SAPS.

‘The timing, on the day of the release of the latest crime stats, is also a reminder of how much work still needs doing to address crime in our city,’ says Smith.

‘Last year, the City started a dedicated Law Enforcement unit in the CBD and plans are underway for similar initiatives in the Bellville and Wynberg CBD hubs.’
