NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP, MI – An Upper Peninsula airport that’s been vacant for over 20 years is expected to be converted into a marijuana growing facility by a local tribe, WLUC reports.
The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community expects growing to begin in 2023 at the former Marquette County Airport in Negaunee Township, the report said. The property includes a two-story, 40,000-square-foot building on 96 acres. The tribe plans to start with a 10,000-square-foot grow room and 10,000 square feet of office space of the first floor of the building. Subsequent phases call for an additional 20,000-square-foot grow room on the second floor, plus greenhouses on 20 acres.
“It’s about time we put this space to use and with the growing cannabis market, this is the perfect retrofit for this building,” said Gary Loonsfoot Jr., the tribe’s director of cannabis development.
The tribe will grow many strains that are available in the Lower Peninsula, which could help cut transportation costs for U.P. dispensaries, he said.
The township planning commission unanimously approved the tribe’s redevelopment plan last week, the report said. The tribe is now waiting for state approval of its marijuana grow license.
