STAUNTON — Phillip Ballurio has seen recreational marijuana bloom in Colorado. So when Virginia legalized marijuana, he made the move back home to Staunton.
As of July 1, adults 21 years old and older are legally permitted to grow up to four marijuana plants per household for personal use and adults could possess up to an ounce of marijuana.
Ballurio saw a need in the area for a shop to help people create at-home grow operations. Queen City Cultivators Inc. on Washington Street in Staunton sells indoor growing materials for cannabis. The shop, which opened a few weeks ago, also offers installation, setup and guidance in terms of how to set up in-home grow operations.
He doesn’t sell the seeds — you have to go elsewhere for those, mainly online, he said.
With indoor cultivation, you control the sun, Ballurio said. The setups can be used to cultivate the plant and then transplant it outside when the weather gets warms and harvest from there. Or, you can do the entire grow cycle from inside the tent.
Using tents, you can harvest three to four times a year, he said.
The tents — either 5-foot by 5-foot or 4-foot by 4-foot — are set up either in a basement or spare room, somewhere that is kept cool. The tents can also be temperature control with vents and fans, all of which are sold at Queen City Cultivators.
