What more can be done to prevent deadly car rampages in Melbourne’s Bourke Street?Posted by On


VOX POP:  I do ask myself why Melbourne and why Bourke Street because a few things have happened on Bourke Street.

ELIAS CLURE, REPORTER:  Melburnians are still coming to terms with what unfolded on Bourke Street just two days ago.

VOX POP:  I don’t really understand why anyone would do that or yeah, but it was a bit terrifying.

SEBASTIAN GIACOBELLO:  It is not nice that anything happens where you work or where you live.

ELIAS CLURE:  It was just after a quarter past six on Friday night when pedestrians spotted a car racing down Bourke Street in a section of street off limits to cars.

The driver then continued onto a busy intersection where three pedestrians near a tram stop were struck.

At the next intersection the driver allegedly collided with a car being driven by 76-year-old man who was killed.

An Uber was also struck with both people inside being taken to hospital.

Terrified onlookers told 7.30 the crash sounded like an explosion.

WITNESS:  I didn’t think it was a car crash, then I saw the car hit there in the middle of the intersection and I saw the black car like flying over there.

WITNESS 2:  Yeah, it was quite an intense collision so they were quite destroyed, the three cars.

ELIAS CLURE:  When the car came to a stop, the driver climbed out and onto the roof of his car. He was arrested by police.

As you can see now, this block completely cordoned off. In fact, it goes back a couple of streets but just a couple of hours ago, it was bustling with people coming home…
