Cannabis is a topic that divides opinion across both the UK and the wider world, with different countries taking very different approaches to regulating the drug. In the UK cannabis, or weed, is a Class B drug, meaning under the law it’s treated with the same severity as things like methamphetamines and ketamine.
Even if you’re smoking it at home, using cannabis is still illegal and the distinctive smell is instantly recognisable, and a common feature of life in the UK up and down the country despite the legality of it, London being no different.
However if you have a neighbour who smokes the drug regularly to the extent that the smell is creeping into your home or garden, you might want to know what your rights are around this.

Currently the law says that anyone found in possession of Class B drugs like cannabis can be subject to jail time for a maximum of five years, an unlimited fine, or both. Meanwhile supply and production of the drug carries a heavier sentence of up to 14 years in prison, the unlimited fine, or both.
There are a number of sustained efforts going on to fully decriminalise the drug in the UK, but none have been successful. Downing Street said last year that Prime Minister Boris Johnson has “absolutely no intention of legalising cannabis”.
