BENGALURU: The CBD has roads that are among the city’s logistical lifelines connecting the north, south, east and west withone another. However, the issue of vehicular traffic is reportedly less problematic than concerns around undisciplined pedestrians and mushrooming business outlets.
Around Richmond Road, residents of Shantinagar told TOI that they have been repeatedly complaining about unauthorised eateries and joints but their pleas have fallen on deaf ears. Due to proximity to prominent educational institutions, the area is an attractive location for small businesses catering to students.
“These small hotels and shops eat up footpaths and causeblockades on roads as their customers park their vehicles on the street,” said GS Renukaprasad, president, Shanthinagar Residents Welfare Association. Richmond Road too has deteriorated over the years due to a sewage chamber that overflows regularly. The problem aggravates every time it rains but residents say manhole choking caused by the ‘unlicensed eateries’ is also a factor. “They pour out waste consisting of oily liquids into these drains,” Renukaprasad added. Also, businesses around MG Road told TOI that jaywalking is a serious concern. “Pedestrians do not use crossings and don’t even walk on pavements.
