Suspicious members of the public alert police to cannabis farms in WearsidePosted by On

Police have praised alert neighbours on Wearside who helped officers find two cannabis farms in a matter of days.

On Friday, officers were flagged down by a member of the pubic on Hedworth Terrace in Shiney Row amid suspicious activity at a home that was thought to be vacant.

When officers went inside they found a man and a cannabis farm with more than 150 plants at various stages of growth.

A 56-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of producing a Class B drug.

Then on Monday, officers responded to a community tip-off about suspected criminality at a house on Fairy Street, Hetton-le-Hole.

Officers turned up and followed their nose – after noticing a strong smell of cannabis coming from inside and the sound of fans oscillating.

After seeing police at the door, a person from an upstairs window initially refused to let officers inside but it was only a matter of time before the police located a second cannabis farm in the loft with about 20 plants.

A 28-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of producing a Class B drug.

Sergeant Steve Passey, of Northumbria Police, has praised the community and has encouraged others to get in touch if they suspect drug misuse or supply in their area.
